CHAPTER 14: RETRIEVAL SERVICE

Rain poured all afternoon and lightning hammered the beached skeleton. A few times I’d seen lightning strike three or four times, quickly one after the other. Almost as if it attracted lightning. The skeleton was the remainder of a once great beast that fascinated me more and more every time I laid eyes on it.

As long as the lightning didn’t hit the ship or the water nearby, I didn’t mind, but it was dangerous nonetheless. What truly bothered me was how much time we’d wasted because of the weather.

That, again, gave me more than ample time to stare out at the beach… Unless there was a lot of metal in the skeleton, it shouldn’t be attracting lightning as much. And if it was made out of a kind of steel, well, we’d be able to use it to forge gear and ammo.

My mind kept wandering back to the clarriana. I couldn’t help but think about the mangled wing and the monster’s slumber. Did the silvery Dragon-bird kill this monster some years or even decades ago? It only made me wonder why the Dragon engaged the raccoon-like monster from up close if it could rain down lightning from the sky. Even a monstrosity like the one to whom the remains belonged, couldn’t stand to survive an onslaught of aerial attacks without a way to get to its attacker.

“Just another thing to add to my already too-long to-find-out list,” I muttered, turning away from the railing and making my way below deck.

It was crowded with most people hiding from the rain. Tiny and his brethren remained outside as they enjoyed the weather for some reason they wouldn’t go into. It had been like that during the whole trip as well, and even then they’d never say. Maybe it was their way of bathing as I’d never seen them getting naked and cleaning themselves, yet they didn’t stink.

Odd.

“Does it even matter?” I mumbled, pushing yet another stray thought away. This place wasn’t doing me good, or anyone for that matter.

“Where are we at?” I asked Callick.

He sat at the foot of the stairs on an oversized chair that one of the Giants usually used. His face was set into a frown and mostly mirrored my own.

“We’re just waiting for it te stop rainin'. Everyone has gotten their scanner and Pakora hearts, lad. We’ve fixed wheels to seventeen large crates, the ones we will need right away when we get there, and we prepared a lot of rope and tents as ye suggested. Now, let me ask ye straight, lad. Do ye really think tis’ the best choice?”

“I do,” I said without a moment of hesitation. “You will thank me when you see the place for yourself, old friend. There’s enough room to start a thriving community, or at least to hold out for a while until we either get saved, or until someone else gets unlucky enough to get stranded in this terrific place.”

“What are you two talking about?” Val asked as she appeared around the corner.
